What greater simple joy is there than the first sip of a perfect Martini? I struggle to think of one.
Hedonism; the pursuit of pleasure can be found within the confines of a martini glass. One, two, three, four olives? Keep going. I request my Martini dirty, extra olives to make up for the dinner I should have eaten earlier. All too often I am having far too much fun and forget about it, preferring to dine past midnight at a supper club.
The Martini has such a history, probably requiring up to 5 martinis coming and going in your hand to illuminate it. Recently I attended a masterclass of this classic. Held by Fleming&Freear, the masterclass opened my eyes and tastebuds to the diversity of this luxurious elixer. Over 5, maybe it was 6 martinis, I travelled through time and accross the world, skipping over literary pages and cocktail myth. It is these delicious morsels of information and intruigue that make the Martini not only what it is today, but make it taste all the more gorgeous.
Gin please. But what kind? Oh my! From the Botanist to The West Winds, Antipodes and the classic Tanqueray – I adore you all! But moderation is the key to truly experience the complexity of distillation, flavours range as far as you can imagine and then some. Alchemy in a glass I like to call it. Perfectly measured, balanced and mixed, the perfect Martini is no small feat.
My only sadness is seeing the bottom of my glass, but not to fear… another is on its way…
