In conjunction with OzAsia festival, The Art Gallery of South Australia’s exhibition: Ever Blossoming, brings together some of the finest early Japanese works in exquisite juxtaposition with new aquisition of the same name. It is such an exciting time to watch our State Gallery grow and explore the digital era of fine art.
“Imagine an artwork, which like nature, endlessly creates itself anew, presenting each viewer a unique if fleeting moment. For the first time the Gallery presents artworks by the artist collective teamLab (formed 2001) whose aim is to ‘achieve a balance between art, science, technology and creativity’. The most recent acquisition Ever Blossoming Life II – A whole year per hour, Gold (2016) features moving images depicting the life cycle of seasonal flowers, which are never repeated. The work highlights the collective’s practice which infuses Japanese painting traditions with contemporary technology and design to produce an experience like no other.”
Ever Blossoming is a digital algorithmic work by Art Collective, Team Lab. Viewing the mathematics as a language expressed in an ever blooming cycle, is a sight to behold. Speaking with the curators, the very beauty of algorithmic creation was revealed. The work appears to be a film, but in reality you are seeing something grow and develop that will never repeat itself. It is random upon random, and even that algorithm pattern is random. This instilled in me a sense of awe, knowing that in the moments I spent gazing into its blooming depths, It was a special, non repeatable experience.
“Formed in 2001, TeamLab is a collective, interdisciplinary creative group that brings together professionals from various fields of practice in the digital society: artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians, architects, web and print graphic designers and editors. Referring to themselves as “Ultra-technologists,” their aim is to achieve a balance between art, science, technology and creativity.”
Ultra-technology as a creative outlet has been explored in fruitful depths here, with each passing hour, seasons go past and within it, our emotions take the journey too; reacting to the colours, composition change and sheer beauty of watching the seasons on fast-forward. Mesmerised by this piece and enchanted by the rest of the exhibition, Ever Blossoming is a trip that took me from Edo-Period Japan to the current day. Parallels are seamlessly drawn between works of different eras, their aesthetic production on par today as it was in yesteryear.
